The client has an existing website with very low interaction and usage but had no idea what the problem was, after several meetings with the stakeholders and analysing their current traffic statistics, I noticed the current product solution was not properly designed to serve all aspects of the market because they only had a website. In a country with only 15% of the population using a smartphone out of 170 million total mobile subscription, using a solution that works for 15% only wasn’t the best.

After meetings with the stakeholders, the problem was clear and the next step was to find how to make the solution more accessible and efficient.

Who else operates in this space?

I researched other recycling companies globally and during my research interview I was also able to get some local companies that are recycling wastes and I gathered and compared the kind of solutions they all provide.

I interviewed 60 people; 20 with smartphones, 20 with low-end phones and 20 without a mobile device. The question path I used was this: After meeting different people and asking them questions, I noticed a larger percentage of the smartphone users recycle their waste compared to low end mobile phone users and non mobile phone users.

After going through the result of the research, It was evident to us that recycling through USSD(which is available to every mobile user) and having agents in local communities will make the Earth-count solution more accessible.

I designed a user flow that shows how ussd can make the solution more accessible to everyone and making use of local agents. I presented it to the stakeholders and it was approved.

The goal was to make the user flow as simple as possible so the primary mode of registration was changed to ussd and the web solution will be used only to request pickup. After 2 sketches and wireframe prototype and guerilla testing them with random people, I was able to come up with a very fast and efficient flow for the web solution.
